Furthermore, smart meters feature bidirectional metering capabilities that facilitate the utilization of distributed energy resources. In addition to recording the electricity consumed by a user, they can also record the electricity supplied by the user back to the power grid. If a user has installed self-owned distributed clean energy generation facilities-such as wind turbines or solar panels-any surplus electricity generated beyond their own immediate needs can be fed back into the grid.
